LAURA Waring signed up for private health insurance because she had to.

The financial analyst's income pushed her above the Medicare levy threshold and, like many young Novocastrians, she opted to pay for private cover rather than be slugged with a surcharge.

Today the 25-year-old is celebrating the news that the federal budget will double the threshold to $100,000 for singles and $150,000 for couples.

"I'll get rid of my private cover almost immediately," Ms Waring said yesterday.

"I don't see the point in such an expense for something I just don't need. I don't play contact sports, don't wear glasses and I have good teeth."

Ms Waring pays $60 a month for basic young persons health cover with NIB insurance and under her policy would pay an excess of about $500 for a claim.

"I would consider getting private health cover again when it came time to have a baby, but there's no value in it for me now," she said.
